About the Archive

Photo-Art Studio was a commercial photography studio in Portland, Oregon, active through the middle decades of the 20th century. It supplied Pacific Northwest publications, tourism boards, and businesses with stock and assignment photography — landscapes of Oregon and Washington, civic events, industry, and everyday city life during the postwar era.

The collection

The surviving negatives document the region's scenic destinations — Multnomah Falls, Mt. Hood, the Columbia River Gorge, the Oregon Coast — alongside Portland street scenes, V-J Day celebrations, and working life across the state. Images catalogued here are scanned from the original negatives.

Stewardship & rights

Stephen Ingham acquired the Photo-Art Studio commercial archive in 2001. The bulk of the collection was donated to the Oregon Historical Society in 2002–2003 (Org. Lot 791) to ensure its long-term preservation and public access, with editorial reproduction rights retained for the images presented here.
