Winter Crowd at Government Camp, c. 1933–1941
Winter visitors and parked vehicles crowd the roadside at Government Camp on Mt. Hood, the Highway 26 hamlet that served as the staging area for Mt. Hood ski traffic. The date comes from the frame itself. A hanging sign reads **Rafferty's Mt. Hood Hut**, and the building behind it advertises dinners, lunches, confectionery and fresh home-made pies. Jack Rafferty took over the Mt. Hood Chalet in October 1933, weeks after the Government Camp Hotel burned, and the business carried his name until 1941, when it reopened as the Tyrolean Lodge under new management. The photograph can only have been made in that window. A Sandy Market delivery truck and a chartered bus stand among the parked cars, which run from late-1920s models to the middle 1930s.
